The History of Porsche in Memphis, TN
One of the world's most iconic automakers, Porsche boasts a long legacy of luxury, innovation, and outstanding performance.

The story begins in 1931, when the Austrian-German engineer Ferdinand Porsche founded his own auto consulting firm after years of designing groundbreaking vehicles for other companies. In 1948, he introduced the first model carrying his own name: the Porsche 356. Hand-built in a small garage, this speedy, maneuverable car paved the way for more popular Porsche models to come.

The 1950s

Throughout the 1950s, Porsche designed a series of successful race cars like the Spyder and the Speedster - and its motorsports dominance continues to this day. In 1964, the company struck gold with the introduction of the legendary Porsche 911. This sleek rear-engine sports car swiftly caught on with drivers around the world.

Porsche wasted no time building on the success of the 911, introducing versions with features like a removable roof panel, a semiautomatic transmission, and fuel injection. In the mid-1970s, Porsche debuted the 911 Turbo supercar, one of its highest-performing vehicles yet.

The 1990s

The 1990s were a decade of change for Porsche, as the company introduced the new Boxster roadster, the water-cooled 911 Carrera, and standard front air bags for all its models.

After years of making only cars, Porsche brought out its first luxury SUV in 2003. The Cayenne would go on to become one of the automaker's most successful models and was eventually joined by the smaller Macan SUV.

All the way back in 1900, Ferdinand Porsche built the world's first hybrid car: the Lohner-Porsche. In recent decades, Porsche has continued to lead the way in this field with advanced models like the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car, the 918 Spyder mid-engine plug-in hybrid, and the Cayenne E-Hybrid. The company's first fully electric car, the Taycan, is arriving in the U.S. this spring.

Today's Porsche lineup continues this extensive history of ingenious engineering and first-class quality. Here at Gossett Porsche, we take great pride in this tradition - and we invite you to join in by test-driving and purchasing a Porsche of your own here at our showroom.
